How Do I Know If My Air Conditioner Needs Servicing?
Driving in the UAE is exciting, adventurous, and fun. But it’s no joke if your air conditioning suddenly stops working in the middle of the desert, or when you’re stuck in that traffic jam on the way to work. A car air conditioner is an integral and complex part of your car’s operation, and a faulty car AC unit means hot passengers and an overheated driver.
Not only does this make things uncomfortable, but it could also damage your vehicle through overheating or even damage to the soft furnishings within the cabin. So how can you prevent things getting too hot and bothered this summer, and how do you know when your air conditioner needs servicing?
A quick check
Before you head to the nearest car AC repair centre, you can carry out a simple basic check for yourself. Start the engine and turn the AC up to full. Listen for any unusual noises, place your hand in front of the air vents (ensure they’re open) and make sure cold air is coming out and that the pressure feels right (not too strong or too weak). Finally, is there a bad smell coming from the vent? If there is then even if the pressure and temperature of the air conditioner is good, there could be a leak in the system and the air con gas could be escaping, or it could need a thorough clean to remove bacteria and mould from the system’s filters.
If you think there may be a problem then a final check is to pop the bonnet and listen to the car AC compressor and listen for a ‘clicking’ noise, which is the sound of the compressor turning on and off. If there’s no click, or it’s intermittent then your air con may need attention. Simply take the car to a nearest FastFit centre and get your AC repair or have your car AC gas filling.
What does an AC service include?
Like any part of your car, the air conditioning system can eventually start to perform below its best. This is because it needs a car AC gas refill to get the system working efficiently once more. A service will usually include recharging and refilling the refrigerant gas that’s used to cool the air before it’s circulated through the car, as well as carrying out a vacuum test to ensure there are no leaks.
Your AC car service will also ensure there is no moisture within the system so that you’re not pumping moist air into the cabin. This is important because moisture within a system allows bacteria to multiply, so part of your service will be an anti-bacterial clean-through to make sure the air circulating is fresh and healthy.
How often should I have my air conditioning system serviced?
Car AC units are usually very reliable, but in a hot region like the UAE, they do tend to get a bit more of a workout than cars in more temperate climates. The estimate is that a car AC system will lose around 10% of its refrigerant every year, so to keep it working at its best it should be serviced every two years.
